Wind Turbine Energy

What is a wind turbine? You may hear a wind turbine referred to as a windmill or wind generator. Though the names are used interchangeably, there is a minor difference. A wind turbine utilizes wind power to create mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is then used as is or changed to electrical energy. A windmill uses the mechanical energy as is for extracting water or for grinding purposes, and the wind generator is the one that produces electrical energy. What are the different kinds of wind turbines? Wind turbines are split into two types according to their orientation:

  1. Horizontal Axis Turbines – The turbine blades turn along a horizontal axis.
  2. Vertical Axis Turbines – These turbine blades rotate along a vertical axis.

The horizontal axis wind turbines are most commonly used. They are more efficient than vertical type. What are some of the advantages of using a wind turbine to produce electricity? We will now look at some of the benefits of a wind turbine:

  • Power-Saving:: Wind turbines utilize a free source of power – the wind. Thus they are a cost-effective way to make electricity. And since they don't use non-renewable resources, they are also good for the earth as a whole.
  • Cost Effectiveness: The only cost involved in installing a wind turbine is the initial expense and the cost of upkeep. The energy source is free!
  • Environment-Friendly: The wind turbines are environment friendly in that they do not give off harmful gases or impact the environment in any way.
  • Uninterrupted Power Supply: Obtaining your electricity supply from a wind generator means you'll no longer have to rely on a power company. Moreover, you overcome the hurdles of blackout.

What are the factors you should think about prior to installing a wind turbine? While implementing a wind turbine is extremely advantageous for you and for the rest of the world, you must be careful not to implement the solution in an incorrect way. You need to take into consideration these conditions before installing a wind turbine. Two conditions should be met:

  • An acre of land available for installation.
  • Local wind speed must be around 11 mph
  • The base and tower need to be sturdy enough to stand up to turbulence.
  • Ensure proper tower height and distance between the generator and the cells.
